How to live your inner artist every day
Being an artist is not just about painting & making music, we are all artists & creators
Many people think Artists are painters, musicians, sculptors, designers etc.
Therefore, many people also think they are not artists.
Even worse: they think they are not creative at all.
This couldn’t be farther away from the truth.
I truly believe, we are all artists at our core! Every human being!
Stick with me for a while & I will try to make you see the potential for artistry and living your inner artist everywhere you go!
If we agree upon, that being an artist means to be creative, free, connected to ourselves and create SOMETHING, this means you can be an artist any second of your life, if you want to!
How to be an artist in your everyday life:
Dress each day how you feel: pick the color you are drawn to, choose an accessory that makes you happy, maybe make a nice hair style or choose something you would not usually dress like for a normal day.
Why? To see yourself as the artist AND as the creation you are.
When you cook or prepare food: do one thing differently. Mix it up! It could be a new spice, a funny arrangement of your breakfast ingredients, or a completely new recipe.
Why? To be creative with what you put into your body, to appreciate it even more and bring joy to the process. Art is about experimenting.
When you walk to work, or take a walk anytime else: walk a different path, change direction randomly & go where you have never been before.
Why? To explore new areas, see new things and create a new mini-experience on your day. Art is about exploring.
Do you have a lunch routine? Or a coffee break routine? Mix it up! Go somewhere else or try a new tea flavour!
Why? Again: being an Artist is about exploring new things & experimenting
Any moment during your day, when you put on earplugs to commute somewhere: don’t do it. Leave them in your pocket. Experience yourself and your surrounding at the level you are currently at. Without anything external entering your system.
Why? As an artist its important to connect to our pure, inner self. Music can enhance this at times, but it also has the power to distract us from ourselves. Try to stay with yourself, if only for a moment.
I deliberately chose non-typical art situations we all face in our lives to emphasize that we all have the choice to apply artistry at any moment throughout each day.
I could go further and say:
write your usual message to your friend or mom in a new & different way, be creative with your words.
Do a spontaneous call to someone you didn’t talk to in a long time & surprise them, cos artistry is spontaneity & surprise all the time.
Sing & dance to a favorite song of yours once per day! And so on, and so forth :-)
I hope these gave you some ideas on how to be artistic in our everyday life, how to live and be the Artist you are!
And I invite you to observe how you feel in all these situations!
Does it make you feel more joyful?
Do you laugh & smile when you see your breakfast berries arranged in a smiley face?
Do you actually feel a bit more confident wearing red to your meeting?
All these can be consequences of being mindfully artistic in your life.
And I would argue that all of them are brilliant to feel and experience during the day!
Now, of course I can also share some more classical-art related tips and how to incorporate them into your everyday life.
Cos I have met many people who say they are not creative, artistic or they can’t draw.
I will share with you some tips on how to let drawing- and sketching-moments slip into your life and make you feel your artistic side even more!
How to be a visual artist in your everyday life:
Funny notes: maybe next time you leave a note for your kids, your husband, your roomie, partner or friend, make it funny!
Draw something cute, use a glittery pen, write with an extra nice handwriting. Make it as personal & creative and cheesy as you want!
Meeting scribbles: the next time you sit in a meeting & take notes, don’t do it typing on your laptop, use a pen & paper and scribble away.
Use icons like stars to point out important tasks, ideas can be visualized with a lightbulb, processes can be done with arrows, circles and connecting lines…
Try to make the input you get as visual as possible, you will be able to remember it better
Summarizing day sketches: if you are journaling and writing every day, that is already quite artistic.
If you want to ramp it up, make a summarizing visual sketch about your day. It can be as simple as stick figures in a situation you remeber from that day, or a beautiful bird you saw… anything you want
Whiteboard: if you have a whiteboard at work, involve it actively in your conversations or 1:1 meetings, scribble away your thoughts & notes on it, visible for your conversation partner.
Next level: encourage them to join you on the whiteboard. Like that you can create a joint whiteboard-art piece
I promise you that these type of meetings are very memorable!
Visual To Do lists: if you are a fan of to-do-lists, make them visual!
Instead of a dot or a star at the beginning, draw a fitting icon. Or make them overall more visual & scribbly.
That way you will remember them better & also have more fun creating them & ticking them off, cos when you look at them, you will see a piece of art, rather than a boring list of things to do.
Paint your nails: simple, if you paint your nails sometimes, dare to paint them differently. Maybe with a tiny flower on one, or a dot-artwork on the other. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just funny, cute & creative :-)
I hope these more “artsy” tips gave you inspirations for being more visually artistic in your every day life!
It doesn’t need to be an oil painting each month, or watercolor studies every week, it can be those tiny doodles or scribbles.
Maybe from those you will start feeling the joy & benefit they bring you & want to continue!
And then, maybe you will want to pick up a regular drawing practice, even if its just 10 minutes every day!
In case you are interested to draw and sketch together, and ask me things about drawing, painting and being creative, I would love to have you as a paid subscriber.
Every other week, I offer Q&As or drawing sessions together. You can sign up as a paid subscriber below!
