Business - a screaming rollercoaster ride down your own psychology: how to embrace the ride
Includes tips & tricks to handle this rewarding ride
Remember the craziest rollercoaster you ever went on? The ups & downs, the fear & excitement, the adrenaline, all at once, all over the place!?
And in the end, you felt relieved, happy you did it, and proud of yourself for facing your fear!
That’s what business is like. At least in my experience.
Why?
Because you never know what is coming, even when you have a plan.
Let’s say you want to sell your services and make scientific illustrations for others.
BOOM, suddenly, you realize you need to price this service!
Oh noo… you immediately feel your hands are sweating, you don't like money, and your mind is racing. “What will people think? I don't want to be a sleazy salesperson. What if I am too expensive? Should I price lower?”
Here starts your rollercoaster ride into your own psychology, aka. limiting mindsets & fears…
Maybe you grew up hearing your parents complain about being poor and that everything was so expensive. Maybe you never got pocket money and could never buy those stickers everyone of your friends was trading. You felt left out.
Suddenly you have to face your fear of being the outcast of your social group… you will be all alone, with a business that will go down the drain… the spiral starts turning downwards…
All these thoughts, worries, and subconscious patterns will affect how you price your business, how confident you are in discussing it with your clients, and, ultimately, whether your business succeeds or not.
And so on, and so forth.
This can happen at any time when you run a business. With any fear you have, with any limit, your subconscious mind made up. BOOM, another one is there, deal with it!
However, if you deal with those fears, work through them, and suddenly notice how your mindset shifts, you will feel relieved, joyful, and confident, and it will be no problem to set your pricing confidently.
It is basically impossible to not change when you have a business. On all kinds of levels.
Every limiting mindset that can block you in your business, is an opportunity to shift & change.
Some other examples of such inhibitions I had:
I disliked social media: needed years to find my voice & start enjoying posting online.
I felt weird on pictures: needed to get a professional shooting.
I was afraid of video content, but I started my own challenge and got over it. I now post video content regularly.
Each one of these fears or limiting mindsets sat very deeply.
So the question is: how to embrace this crazy ride & what to do if you notice limiting mindsets in yourself?
1. Face them. Acknowledge them, look at them & do not push them away.
Do not minimize them, and do not disconnect from them saying they are ridiculous.
They are not.
They are there to protect you from hurt & failure.
2. Start to make a plan on how to address them.
A powerful way is to feel into them and let them be present in your body. Do not skip this step as it could lead to avoidance. They will just come back stronger.
Write them down & imagine getting them out of your system (after you felt them).
Don’t be rude to them, be kind, thank them for protecting you & release them.
3. Try to come up with a plan of baby steps on how to address them bit by bit.
Maybe you can just post one time per week, a random picture.
Then you start sharing an opinion, maybe with a picture showing yourself.
Or any other baby step that is not as scary as facing the full big fear!
4. Sometimes all that is not enough.
Consider getting help from a coach or Mentor—someone you trust and know who has gone through the same thing.
Get strategies on how to keep on working on it yourself.
5. However, do not get fooled that someone else will fix those limiting mindsets for you.
It needs you actively there, working on them. It is your responsibility.
Stay present, through all the pain that will surface.
And all that is not an easy task to do.
It means hurt & pain, crying & suffering, feeling stupid & doubting yourself, at least for a while. Then comes a shift & realization & all turns out well.
…until the next realization hits you & you discover the next fear or challenge ;).
As I told you: screaming rollercoaster ride down your own psychology!
No one told me this was the case when starting my own business. Who should have? Nobody in my closest family started a business.
Neither did I have friends who started their own companies. I only got to know other entrepreneurs on my journey, becoming one myself.
Yet, this crazy, screaming rollercoaster ride of starting a business is one of the most rewarding actions I have ever taken! I wouldn’t want it any other way! The freedom I have, the choices to do what I want and develop howout being restricted to anyone deciding over my time, I want to, with is worth it all!
The knowledge that I am growing, developing, and changing, learning every step on the way, unlocking new parts of me, and serving the world and other people: It's worth it!!!
I am currently restructuring and considering new offers and projects, and I am so excited that I can build my life the way I want!
Learning how to write is part of this endeavor as well, so I would love to get feedback on this piece.
I am working out great headlines to make sure I get more readers. This one today seems to be very much out of my typical comfort zone :D
Have a great Sunday!
Love,
Daria
